Default Is it possible to travel without PR Card???

My friend is a landed immigrant in Canada. He only has his old landed immigration papers given to him at the time of his arrival into Canada. He, however, does not have his PR card at this point. He just got his British passport renewed.

So, my question is would he not be able to travel to US and get back to Canada? He is going to apply for his PR card and we saw the timelines for processing as 56 days.

Is there no way he could come here to the US and get back to Canada?

He can, but commercial carriers are sometimes sticky about canadian residents (even on visa waiver passports) not having the PR card, they have been told PRs need to have the PR card, and as they are not trusted to know the intricasies of the law they stick to what they are taught...they dont want to take the chance on a passenger being refused entry on return without it.

Dont Brits now need to do the online visa preapproval thing to visit the states? I dont know how that works, but a non british address may complicate that without the PR card.

If he is just driving across its probably a lot easier, although they may give him a hard time on his return. Ultimately he is a PR either way and will be admitted, but it could be a hassle.

The technically correct approach if he cant get an expedited PR card is to get the travel document while in the US so that he can board a flight / bus without the card...but thats a hassle he can probably do without if he feels he can board a flight to Canada on the strength of the UK visa waiver passport alone , and then get past immigration with the paper form. I suppose it depends on the individuals risk tollerance...

So much easier to just get canadian citizenship once you become eligable....

I think applying for the card is all done when you 'land'. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong!

This is correct. They will process your PR card application when you land and it will be mailed to you within a month.
