Default Is it possible to live Canada when working remotely for an European company

Hi Everyone,

I would like to understand the process if it is even possible to move and live in Canada while remotely working for a European based company. This company has no registered offices in Canada.

Is there a way to move to Canada in this way? From my initial research, the answer is no but I wanted to hear from real people. Alternatively, some advice on finding a job that offers a relocation package is hard. Where does one start?

I have taken a look at the IEC visa but I believe I could only apply for that if I am working for a Canadian company right? (I can't apply for this one in regards to remote working is my understanding)

For some context, I am 24 years old and live in London. I am currently a Customer Success Manager in the technology industry currently working remotely in London for a European company. I don't have anyone who could sponsor me and I don't want to go through any visa process without securing a job offer.

Any general advice would be great.

(Apologises if this has been answered before - I just want it to be in one place)

Thanks,
Maryan

You are fine to go and work in Canada remotely, as you wouldn't be taking a job away from a Canadian. But on a tourist visa you'd only be given up to 6 months entry, so you couldn't stay indefinitely doing it, and that's the real issue. It's not the working that you need a visa for, it's the staying long term.

Nope. No job offer at all is needed for an IEC visa, it's an open work permit.

Honestly? IMO, no chance of finding a job with a relocation package unless you have more specialist skills. Relocation packages haven't been common for a while anyway, and with so many Canadians out of work, I just don't see it happening. An IEC visa is far and away your best bet, and then you can job hunt when there and work authorised.

HTH, best of luck.

1. Note that is quite likely that IEC will not open in 2021, as it closed in 2020 with only 272 invitations issued in the UK.

Thank you so much for the information. I will use the tourist visa and see if Canada is somewhere I would like to live and work before looking into other avenues.

I might take a look at the express entry visa and use my connections in the technology industry to find a job in Canada.

Thanks!

Just note that you can't visit at the moment, so you'll need to wait until Covid restrictions are lifted.

For EE, that's a great option (and no job offer required) if you want to live there permanently and as long as you're scoring enough on the CRS - you'll need to score above approx 470 a rough guide.

Good luck.

Sadly I have to agree with this. Given the slow rate of vaccination in Canada and the fact that some provinces still have restrictions on inter-provincial travel, it would seem like an unusual move to reintroduce a temporary stream aimed at encouraging extensive tourism.

A quick reminder that we like to keep the Immigration and Citizenship forum strictly to Immigration and Citizenship matters/questions, requests for help etc., - for general chat about Canada, please post in the Canada or Maple Leaf forums. Thanks.
