Default Please Help!

Just wondering if there is anyone out there that can help me?
We are looking to move our family to Calgary, My husband has Canadian citizenship and is going to be working for CP railway, starting November time. However me and the kids will follow February time hopefully. I just need to get a grip of what forms need to be sent first. I understand that my husband will have to sponsor me and my 3 kids from a previous marriage, but I just have a whole load of paperwork in front of me, no hair left and I don't know where to start! I would really appreciate it if someone could explain it all in laymans terms.

Hi lornwilson,

First and foremost, welcome to BE.

Great news that hubby is a Canadian as, if everything were straightforward, one imagines you'd be here much sooner than most folk. Have you had a look at this article on the WIKI?

http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Spousa...sorship-Canada

One question here for you to figure out, is whether your children meet the definition of being "dependent" - the above article will help you decide.

The above article also suggests that your application will be quicker if initiated from outside Canada and by the sounds of it, that is your plan.

Here is the relevant part of the CIC website...
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigra...sor/spouse.asp
From this page, you can take the link to the How To Apply page...
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigra...-apply-how.asp
Which essentially explains that your husband's sponsorship application and your Permanent Residence applications must be sent off together.

The big question that is jumping out at me from your post is the question of the children from a former marriage. You may have this completely in hand but there have been a number of threads on Expats about ensuring you have the right to remove the children from your current country and to Canada. Have a read through a couple of these threads to get the gist...

There are more threads of this nature but this is a start.

I'm absolutely not expert in this and maybe one or two of the immigration experts on this forum will come along and enrich this answer for you. Also, one or two of the parents mentioned in the above posts might offer their advice.

Hope you manage to sort your way through the paperwork soon and that this reply goes some small way towards helping you do that.

Kind regards (from just down the road from Calgary, in Okotoks!),

Eamonn & Janet.

All i can say is I second to what Getting there has said and pointed you to..

good luck and start it right now???? get some ink in your printer and start printing forms and getting documents ready.. start looking for stuff now now and now.

good luck and all the best

A big thank you for that you guys that info was really helpful.
Looks like I can make a start filling in the application for permanent residence today, we've already done the sponsorship form, just want to get the ball rolling now!

The kids will qualify as dependents and there's no problem with taking them out of the country as their father passed away a few years ago.

Ok so the next bit.

As I said my husband will go over first and find rented accomodation for us all for when we follow later. Hubby will be working for CP in Calgary (in the area of Blackfoot trail and 9th Avenue SE I think) so was wondering if anyone could suggest nice areas/communities to start looking at (or to avoid!), bearing in mind our 3 kids (Ages 13,9 and 7) schooling will be a priority (we don't want to move them twice!!), there seems to be so many communities, it's like "where do I start??" feel free to PM me your suggestions....

Thanks again!!

Pleased it helped.

Sorry to hear about the children's father. To cover all the bases, perhaps it might be prudent to secure a copy of the death certificate. Have no idea if this will be strictly necessary but at least you'd have it to hand if needs be. Just a thought.

Will drop you a PM but there might be a problem with you accessing it as you have yet to reach the required 3 posts...I know this applies to you sending a PM but don't know if it impacts reading them. Simple solution, just post something in response to this post and you'll be off and running.

Kind regards,

Eamonn & Janet.

Great! Here's another post

Good point about the death certificate, will obtain a copy just in case...

Looking forward to hearing/reading people's ideas for potential communities...

Lorna.
Hi Lorna,

You should have a PM now. Look at the indicator in the top right of your British Expats screen.
