Greetings,
I would really appreciate it if someone could shed some information on this
issue.
I received my immigrant visa and plan to enter Canada next month. I understand
that the PR card will be mailed to a Canadian address and that it can take upto
3-4 months before it is received. My question is since I would need to travel
out of Canada for about 2-3 months to fix and sell a home in the UK:

1. From where am I to apply and turn in the application for the travel documet?
2. Can I request it to be valid for 2-3 months?
3. How long does it normally take before it is issued?
4. How soon can I apply for it?

Thank you very much to anyone who is able to provide me this information.

I am in the exact same situation and have investigated this thoroughly, and as of today, this is what I know (not 100% guaranteed though).

You can leave Canada immediately after landing, even if you do not receive the PR card before you leave. However, if you do not have the PR card in your possession by the time you want to re-enter Canada and as long as you have copies of your landing documents signed by the Canadian immigration officer to prove that you landed, you must return to Canada by December 31, 2003 ONLY IF you are returning by commercial vessel (like by plane), but you can re-enter Canada after December 31st if you are traveling in your own personal vehicle, which of course means that you will be re-entering from the US.

Not entirely true - without PR Card or Travel Document you won't be allowed
to board the plane to Canada even prior to the deadline, unless you are a
national of the country on visa waiver list or unless you landed prior to
June 28, 2002 and still have IMM 1000 Record of Landing.

To Andrew,

I have no idea why you are saying "not entirely true". Read my post again. What you are saying agrees 100% with what I said in my last post.

Landing document (Confirmation of Permanent Residency) that those who landed
after June 28, 2002 get will not work. Only old IMM 1000 that was used
before IRPA will - this is exactly why I said "not entirely true" as many
may confuse those 2 different documents.
