Smile Re: Pelvic Exam!!!!!! What the ****

OMG sounds completely unnecessary.

We live in Preston, Lancashire and we are going to Newcastle on Tuesday for our medicals. I'm lucky I had a hysterectomy 3yrs ago at the age of 37 but have a daughter of 18yrs. When I spoke to the doctor in Newcastle, he advised that internal exams were not necessary.

Think its definitely worth investigating further and look to change dmp if possible. If not, good luck

This is at collegiate in Manchester. Do you have to have this exam at all Dr's or are they just being ultra invasive????? Does anyone know about the liverpool one?

Dreading the experience already
Hi Boxerdog ,i had medical 2 weeks ago at Liverpool and never had pelvic exam just had my abdomen pressed .The doctor never even asked when my last smear was done .The medical took all of 2o mins all very painless ( apart from paying for it )

I had my medical in Red Deer and yes I had the totally invasive, uncomfortable, degrading pelvic exam. I ached for days after and never want to go through anything so horrible again. I feel for you if you need one.

The reasoning the Doc gave me was because I have had abnormal smears and a Colposcophy(sp?) in the past, I am also 36. He said if we didn't do it now, it could be something they asked about and maybe need to do it later. Had I realised what it involved, I think I may have waited and seen!

I hope you manage not to have one.

So do I it sounds horrible. I'm 36 never had an abnormal smear, never had any gyne problems, always had normal periods. Doesn't make sense to me.

It does sound like it's not standard so I will phone around on Monday

You should NOT have ached for days. It sounds like the examining doc needs some feedback on their technique.

I was 39 for my medical and didn't have one here (Edmonton) - I gave the doc a copy of my last results which were just about out of date and they took a copy for the file, but didn't actually even ask about it.

If you need to do this, I feel for you

If you have never had anything unusual than I suspect it't not necessary in you case, I would definately question it.

It felt like it ached for days, could be because I was feeling a little violated, never having anything like that before. I ache after a smear and this was loads worse than that.

It says in the medical thingy somewhere that u can refuse any part of the medical if you provide info by your gp or specialist.

I did have a pelvic exam at either medical and I am way older than you so can see no reason why you need this as a routine thing. I did have a letter from a gynae consultant saying I was all OK though.

Have a google for the DMP handbook and it will tell you if you need it. If it were me I would cancel and go to another , or get one done my my GP.

The dmp Says it should be done "If Clinically Indicated". All depends on Interpretation

Just spotted that
Field 8 – UROGENITAL SYSTEM
Vaginal examination, together with a Papanicolaou smear, should be undertaken if clinically indicated. At the applicant’s request, this examination may be undertaken by the applicant’s own physician or gynecologist, who should provide a written report.
Personally I don't think it is clinically indicated, will phone my GP up on Monday and see if she'll do me a report saying it's not clinically indicated. Watch this space

I had mine done at Leeds Uni Practice; I am over that Age; he just looked at my latest smear tests, most invaisive part was a quick breast exam with a nurse present. Sounds to me like this should be questioned?

I dont think your GP would write a letter telling another doctor whats clinically indicated.

You could ask your GP to do a pelvic exam and write the results of that for you to take. Or you could wait and see if the DMP wants to do one. After all it may just be a "catch all" in the appointment letter to let people know whats likely to happen. They may not want to do one. If they do you may decide to go ahead once you have met the doctor and see the clinic etc. The first DMP I saw was very good, very capable with a good mannner and I would have been ok with a pelvic exam there. The second DMP I saw was horrid and I wouldnt have consented to that.

If when you go you dont consent then you can arrrange for the exam to be done by a doctor you trust, and then send the results on. If you really dont want an internal exam then you could arrange a pelvic ultrasound.

Presumably an abdo one and not transvaginally?!
