Over 50s wanting to move to Vancouver (temporary or permanent)
First of all, thank you to all the contributors on this forum. So friendly and such a wealth of information.
Background:
Two years ago, my husband (then 49) sat the IELTS exam and sent off our application. Our aim was to make a permanent move. However, because of our ages, we didn’t reach the required number of points. (We have a lot family there, but they’re cousins so they don’t count.) A couple of employment agents we spoke to indicated that even if an employer was willing to sponsor, the job might last for only six months (during which time he’d be expected to train a Canadian in those skills). If PR hadn’t come through in that time (highly unlikely), we’d have to leave. We didn’t want to risk moving everything, only to have to reverse the process a few months later. We hadn’t thought about other (temporary, short-term) options. Recently, a friend asked why we couldn’t go for six months, locking up our apartment here. We simply hadn’t considered that two years ago – it was all or nothing.
We’re now wondering about an employer-specific work permit, and would appreciate any insights into this route to spend at least some time in Canada.
I’m puzzled about something. I just went through the ‘Find out if you’re eligible to apply’ (for Express Entry) section on the CIC site again. The addition of a job offer returned a positive result. How would this tie up with the lengthy waits (31 months) I’m reading about? I’m assuming an employer wouldn’t want to wait that long.
My questions:
If my husband was offered a fixed-term contract on an employer-specific visa, would he be able to apply for other positions (other contracts or even permanent) from within Canada during that time? Or would the visa conditions prohibit that?
Is it best to directly approach employment agencies dealing in IT recruitment in Vancouver itself? Or should we find those that specialise in recruiting from abroad; several hits on Google – any recommendations? My husband is a QA Engineer.
Or is there some other way that we haven’t thought about?
Thank you all for your time.

He could perhaps look into Provincial Nomination pilot projects - IT.. in BC, Atlantic Provinces and possibly Ontario (BC has specific professions - Is his job on this list? https://www.welcomebc.ca/getmedia/0c...tions.pdf.aspx

Thank you so much, Siouxie. I discovered the Wiki after I posted - so valuable. Will certainly look into the pilot projects. We were hoping to find other older folk who'd emigrated, but I guess we're in the minority!
Thanks again.

You are most welcome - as to older folk, there's a few about, (I'm no spring chicken myself, but I've been here a few years now)... I'll try to remember a few names and give you links to their threads
