Default The Official Langauge of Montreal is (and Ashley Watson)

.....unfortunately English. I have been here three months now (mainly
to sharpen my French as i am awaiting an interview for CSQ in HK) and
come to realize that English is the dominant(well at least the
business) language in Montreal. It seems that if one can speak only
English, it's sufficient to get brilliant jobs but if you are
Francophone you have to be bilingual. It smacks of irony! Basically
the business elite in Montreal are the Anglophone and they live in the
posh quartier of Westmount and most of them won't even make an attempt
to speak a word of French anywhere they go. Quebec is a French
Speaking Province, unique and distinct from the rest of North America
and if one wishes to speak English there are plenty of places to
choose from in North America, why choose Quebec!

Anyway, good luck to all those who are awaiting CSQ. From the few
people I have spoken too, I understand that it is a slightly faster
process. General remarks...

AOR usually received within a week. Federal process, can take up to 8
months to acknowledge that they got your package!!!!

Initial Assessment usually within 6 months. SOme centres are much
quicker. In the Federal process, you are lucky if you get a AOR within
this time frame.

Interview, usually comes 2-3 months after the assessment. For Federal
it is usually "you are required to attend an interview, we will
contact you in 18 months!"

Only drawback is that once CSQ is obtained, one has to go through the
Federal for Medical and Security checks. Technically speaking this
should be straight forward as you have already been assesses but some
people have ran into problems here while others get things done in 5
months!

As for me, I just hope that the person that interviews me is not a
native person from Montreal, I almost can't understand half of what
they say. It's strange but someone else from Quebec City, I can
understand most of it and have a decent but not complex conversation.
ALthough I realised now that a language is not something that one can
learn in a few months, especially if you are an Anglophone, as I call
it "the curse of an Engish Speaker

Haha same obervation. Before I travelled to Gaspesie, my friend in
montreal warned me about their country accent. Well, what I found out was
not that bad. Then I headed down to Quebec city I thought my listening
skill has improved a lot. A few days later I headed back down to
Montreal. Good god, I think my listening ability has dropped again.
Montreal is a chaudron of unholy mixture.

However, it's perfectly true what you have said. Take years to be able to
get around alright. Last night I was in a bar and listened to a guy from
Abitibi region. His joual is so thick that I could only pick up the theme
of the conversation. By the way, I have only two and half years chalked
up so far. Maybe in another 2 1/2 years I would be much better off.

What do you care about? English, French, you are applying to immigrate to
Canada, aren't you? Once you got approved by Quebec and passed the federal
requirements you will be coming to Canada, Quebec is ONLY a province OF
Canada.
Your message shows clearly that you hate Anglophones. But if it wasn't for
them you would have lived like your brothers and sisters in Mainland
(Communist) China. Because of them, Anglophones (or British for the rest of
the world) you enjoy the freedoms and prosperity HK has to offer. Therefore
thank them, Anglophones/British, for having a good life so far.
