Default Name change

Hi Everyone I landed last year and thinking of requesting for my name change after I
have lived 1 year in Ontario. Questions:
1. Can I have my both first and last name changed?
2. Do I need to submit any documents supporting my request? Which will not be
possible, for I want to take a completely new name (that doesn't appear on any
of my documents). Would appreciate if some one could share one's experience!

Hi,

I changed my name after I came to Canada, but then found it didn't work and I
changed it back.

You have to live in Ontario for 12 months before applying for a name change. To do
this, you have to call the office of the Registrar 416-325-8305 or 1-800-461-2156,
and ask to mail you a "name change package". In a week or so after this, you'll
receive the package with a couple of forms to fill in. The charge is $130 or so, and
you have to provide a couple of references from people who have known you.

You can change all your names or just first name or just last name, or you can call
yourself "z652ed3U". It doesn't matter to the governement - what matters is that you
pay the fee.

I kept my last name, and changed only the first one. As I said, it didn't work. What
I would suggest - if you really have a terrible name and people can't say it in
English - change it to something simpler, but make sure you use a name from your
home country.

When you talk to a Chinese guy and he says his name is Jim, it sounds stupid, and you
can see that he's Chinese, and he even speaks with a Chinese accent - come on! who
are we kidding?

So, stick to your native country names!

Thanks Sergei for sharing with me your name change experience and info related to it.
However, you didn't tell me why it didn't work! "Sergei Drachev" <[email protected]>

It didn't work, because in Canada - unlike the US - noone gives a damn what your name
is. Just go to your nearest Future Shop, or Canadian Tire and take a look at the name
tags that their employees proudly display! I used to work at Future Shop, and
everyone knew me as "Zayne", and then I kept seeing all these people wearing name
tags with 10 (!) syllable names, and I thought, "Hey, what's wrong with Sergei?"

So, one day I just turned up at my job, and told everyone to call me "Sergei".

It just happens that at one point you start thinking, "This is the name MY PARENTS
gave me. Why do I have to pretend I'm someone else?"

I believe that Canada's culture becomes richer when new immigrants bring over
something from their home countries (like their original names).

Once you have your name changed, they will give you a name change certificate. If you
take that to these govt. organisation, they will issue you new cards. Thats what my
understanding is!

Yeah, that's exactly how it works. The Registrar Office will send you a Name Change
Certificate, and then first thing you do - you go to the Ministry of Transportation.
You show this official looking piece of paper, and they give you a new driver's
licence (with your new name).

After you get the driver's licence, you just go and visit all other places. Now on
top of the Name Change Certificate you can also show 'em your new driver's licence.

It's pretty easy.

As is changing it back to your original name
