I have a girlfriend in Thailand that i recently visited in her
country.
We would like to get married.
The way i understand it is, she can come to Canada on a visitors visa
and if i marry her while she is here i can apply to sponsor her as a
spouse. Is that correct?
Also does she require the police record or fingerprinting to come
here?
Thanks alot in advance

Suggest that you start by reading www.cic.gc.ca to give you an idea of the
process. It is unlikely that your girlfriend would be give a CCV to come to
Canada to be married. If she obtained the visitor permit under by claiming
another reason and CIC determines she received it by misrepresentation, then
she would not be eligible for processing as an in-Canada spousal
application.

Thanks PMM,
I read most of the CIC website and i am still confused about how to go
about this.
Do i have to marry her in her country? or Here?
Where do i start? Judging by the amount of questions on this group
this is by far one of the most confusing legal topics.
I would just like a bit of guidance as to how i go about bringing my
fiance to Canada to live with me and to marry her.
It seems like a simple question but i have not found any simple answer
in all my reading the last 3 days.
I am looking for the fastest process to accomplish this result.
Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I would be shocked if they let her in on a visitor's visa... but it's worth
a try, I guess. Just make sure that she's honest about getting married,
especially at the airport when entering Canada. So if you can by some
miracle get her in that way, and marry her... you can do an Inland
application. She will have to hold a valid TRV at all times and will be
unable to work, but the two of you would at least be together.
However, as I said, this route is doubtful. (Only seems Canadians with
British or American spouses get lucky enough to be able to process this way.
The majority anyway...) So, I assume that you'll be going the route that me
and my husband have had to take... We got married in Morocco, filled out
all of our papers and gathered all evidence (make the evidence as exhaustive
as possible) and submitted the Overseas PRV (family class) application with
medicals done and all fees paid. Our overseas visa post takes 4-11 months
to process spousal cases. Hopefully we'll be in the 50% that gets their
visas in 4-6 months. (we've been waiting 4.5 -- and honestly, we're dying.
Being in a long distance marriage is hell. But at least I was able to visit
for 5 weeks at Christmas.) Hopefully not much longer now.
I hope this helps. I'll be watching your post to see if you have any
further questions.
good luck, j.a.a.
~our timeline~
Sept 8.03 - wedding in Morocco
Oct 1.03 - finally received marriage certificate and translation
Oct 6.03 - couriered application
Oct 8.03 - application received and acknowledged by CPC Mississauga
Nov 3.03 - I was approved to sponsor
Nov 24.03 CPC in Paris started processing my husband's application
Dec 16.03 Paris sent my husband a letter (AOR)

Thanks Joel,
Things are becoming a little clearer now.
It seems my only logical option is to go back and marry her in
Thailand. That kinda sucks because i was just there for 3 weeks and i
couldve done it then if i wouldve known about these rules.
Seems kinda nuts to me can marry there but not here but so do alot of
the other canadian laws. I bet a terrorist would have not much more
hassle than a couple in love trying to unite here.
I am currently paying child support to another woman whom i was in
common law with here (i did not sponsor her).
Do you know if this affects my ability to sponsor a spouse?
Thanks again

Hi js... It is stupid that people like us can't marry here... but there's
always the hope of a tourist visa for your fiancee... it's worth a try,
anyway. (costs about $100 to apply in Morocco.) If refused, you'll be
heading back to Thailand. (not such a terrible thing, is it?![Smile](https://britishexpats.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I've known many Thai women... Most of them are so petite and gentle the the
thought of them being any sort of threat to Canada is ridiculous. But the
biggest threat is that she won't go home... but she wouldn't have to if you
got extensions to her TRV and applied Inland... There just seems to be
little logic...
If you do end up getting married in Thailand, be sure to send her to ask
what kind of papers you'll need... I needed DOZENS to get married in
Maroc.... And a friend of mine needed several to get married in Vietnam.
Perhaps Thailand is much easier, but it's still worth it to get the info you
need...
As long as you did not sponsor your common law girlfriend, you should have
no problem with your application with your soon-to-be wife.
good luck, j.a.a.
