Thanks for all you valuable responses on this group...
I understand that on date of landing I need to provide Customs with a list
of goods that I am taking into Canada at that point in time and a list of
goods to follow. I have three questions:
1. How detailed should these lists be (eg 10 pairs of slacks, 1 wristwatch
etc) and should they include serial numbers etc?
2. Is duty levied on the goods (landed goods and goods to follow)?
3. If the goods to follow, arrives after a 12 month period (please correct
me if the cut-off is not a year), do I have to pay duty on these goods even
though it is used furniture?

1. The list is generally described to the level of "carryable items".
i.e. Box - Clothing, Suitcase - Clothing, Box - Books. You only need to
describe in greater detail items of significant value, like jewelry,
electronics, items that are used for business and not personal.
2. No duty is raised on settlers effects unless the items are not of a
personal nature, or to be used in a business.
3. No cut off for goods to follow.

My list was mostly in the form of general categories except for valuable things like TV, VCR, computer, etc. where I listed them with model and serial number and furniture which I listed by item. When I brought up everything a couple of months later, they didn't even look at the list or in my U-Haul truck at all. I had my original list plus a list of all the boxes in the truck which were numbered and a note as to what was in them. The only thing they even looked at was the paperwork for importing my car from the US.

On the other hand, I know someone who didn't have an inventory and had
to empty and repack their truck in the bonded area at the border in
mid-winter!

You have to love their consistency! I was prepared if they wanted to look in the truck, but they only seemed concerned about my car. They didn't even check the vet records for my 3 cats! Best to be prepared for the worst, and it may very well be worse now since it was April 2001 when I brought my stuff across and things have changed alot since then, especially when dealing with trucks.

Last month (Aug 2002) we crossed at Ft. Erie.
We were pulling a U-Haul trailer with a van and we were "loaded". It was
a Friday evening. We pulled off to the side and went inside. All they did
was verify our landing docs (spouse frim within), looked at our B4 list and
stamped it. "Have a nice day."
That was it. They didn't go near the van and U-haul. From the time we hit
the gate to the time hit the QEW took less than 10 minutes.
WR in nothern Ontario.
