Struggled to write a meaningful subject about this one!
I work in IT here in Ottawa. I arrived Dec 06 and have a 3-year work permit under which I can only work for my current employer. I put in my PR application in December.
My question comes because I have had one or two opportunities recently to do some other software development work outside of my employment. I do not want to do anything illegal or jeopardise my work permit but I wondered if there is any legal way for me to receive income from developing software while living here? Things I can't answer:
Hope you'll appreciate I'm not trying to do anything illegal or circumvent my work permit. These opportunities would probably have arisen had I still been in the UK and given that I'd like to strike out on my own some time in the future, it seems a pity to pass them up.
Any advice and thoughts appreciated,
Rich

- Could I invoice from the UK (I still have an address there) and submit a tax return there? Do I need to be UK resident to do so?
- Can I receive payment for (sell) a product or service or would this still constitute "work" just like receiving a salary?
- Can I operate a business where others do the work (I am thinking outsourcing the actual work).
Hope you'll appreciate I'm not trying to do anything illegal or circumvent my work permit. These opportunities would probably have arisen had I still been in the UK and given that I'd like to strike out on my own some time in the future, it seems a pity to pass them up.

Sorry, I guess this would be better in the Immigration forum. I don't think I can move it....
