Default may return to Canada, healthcare pregnancy question.

Hi, my wife and I are Canadians and she is expecting in about 6.5 months.
The small company I work for may go under before she's due and we many have
to return to Canada.

If we do return to Canada, I understand that we would have six months of no
healthcare coverage in the province we land and would have to buy
supplemental insurance. How expensive would this be for a pregnant woman
and would they even cover us with a pre-existing pregnancy? Thanks.

When I landed in Nova Scotia, I got health coverage from day one, so I
guess it depends from province to province.

And it depends on the province you reside in.

A few do cover new residents who arrive
from abroad from the moment they take up residence
without a waiting period.

Most likely Ontario.

So it looks like Ontario does not cover you for first 3 months. My
question, again, is how expensive would this be for a pregnant woman
and would they even cover us with a pre-existing pregnancy?

Three months - but it's actually the balance of the month in which you return + two months. Return on the last day of a month and you have only to wait 8 weeks or so.

No private insurance company will cover pre-existing pregnancy, so better
look for the Province where you can get health coverage from day one.

It's 3 months, and you wouldn't get private insurance for pre-existing.
You might be better to buy cobra to cover the 3 months and pray the
insurer will cover you in Canada

In that case there is a waiting period for all new
residents, including those who come from abroad.

Thanks.

Another alternative may be Alberta. Their site says that people coming to
Alberta from another country "may" (my emphasis) be eligible for coverage on
the date of arrival. No indication on what the "may" means.

From what I understand, cobra will not cover you out of area.

Depends on your specific contract.
