Default Marriage

Hi

Can I use the small paper me and my husband signed when we got married as proof of marriage when I am going to extend my visa. We got married the 16th November and it takes up to 80 days before you can apply for Marriage certificate. Does all paper proof have to be copies and certified.

Thanks
Yogi

A marriage certificate is the only acceptable proof. If you are not
going to get it in time to meet visa requirements, contact the immigration
office and inform them. They may provide you with an extension.

Apply for your extension with what you have. Now.

Hi
Thanks for the advise although I still dont know which advise to follow.
If I do use the small(wedding certificate), do I need to copy it or do I need to send the original?
If I do call the immigration, how do you get to a agent.....the phone is automated and I cant seem to get through to a person. Who do I call, who do I speak to?

Thanks

go to www.cic.gc.ca and then go to the link at the top that says contact
details and then there is al ink on that page that has a list of the call
centre phone numbers. Try the toll free one but often that is busy so try
the one in your province or wherever if you don't mind paying for the call,
i usually get through to the one in Toronto everytime and I am calling from
the UK.
Once the messages have played you need to (if i remember correctly the
messages shoudl tell you) press 0 and then press 2 to get immigration, if
you press 1 you get citizenship andthey cant help you, i know this as i
pressed 1 by accident the first time.
you should then get put through to a human person at the call centre who
will be able to advise you on what to include. However you are likely to get
a different answer each time you call.

You should be fine just sending in a copy of your "souvenier" certificate,
include a letter saying that you are still waiting for the official
certificate but had to apply now so yoru status doesn't expire. It is a
common thing for people applying inland to send in extension requests
recently after getting married before they get the official certificate and
they will understand and if they need the official one later they will send
you a request for it.

The important thing is to get the application in at least a month or so
before your status expires, then you have implied status until they make the
final decision and so it doesnt matter if it gets delayed while they ask for
the real certificate later because you have already applied and so if your
status expires you are ok to stay in Canada while they process yoru
extension request. This is much better than waiting for the original
certificate and then having yoru status expire before it comes and then
having to apply to get it reinstated or leave the country and try and come
back etc etc.

Follow Jim's advice, he is an ex immigration officer so knows what he is
talking about.

Hi Yogi,

When I applied for my 1st visitor extension, i just put (notarized copy) of
"Record of Solemnization of Marriage". Because at that time Ontario
Registry was on strike. But I put an additional letter of explanation.
When I received my extension, they gave me 1 yr of extension.

hope this helps....

If you are in ONtario you can use the Marriage Certificate signed by
the marriage celibrant as proof f marriage. The offical registration
is not needed. I speak from the expereince of many such cases in
ONtario in which we used the bottom portion of the license.

I have heard that too, i honestly wish someone had told after we got married
because we waited the 3 months to apply for the official record and then it
took another 2 months to actually arrive so it made us apply a lot later
than we intended, and that tied in with CHC London's aparant desire to
process everyone elses application before mine, even people who sent their
forms to the CHC weeks and months after me, is why im still not there. I
think if we had just used the solem decleration part we could have gotten
everything together soon and applied more like the end of 2001 instead of
the middle of 2002. oh well.
