Default maple card

I landed in late march and left the country in late April. I'm in
China at the moment. I asked my friend to mail the PR card to me once
he received it. however, he got a letter from CIC today. I have been
scheduled for an appointment to re-take my photo on May 20 and I must
appear in person. is it possible to take the photo in China and send
it to CIC. if not, can I postpone the appointment to Augest when I'll
be back in Canada. how can I go back to Canada without the PR card?

You will have to apply for Travel Document through Canadian Embassy in
China.

Andrew,
I just checked http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/travel.html and it
clearly states that if you have a valid landing record, a travel document
will not be issued for travel prior to Dec 31, 2003. I also spoke to a
customs official a couple of days ago and was told that I could return to
Canada before the end of the year without the maple card.

Original poster landed just last March, thus doesn't have IMM 0008. Also all
who landed after June 28, 2002 with IMM 1000 (issued prior to that date) had
those stamped "Not Valid for Travel" - thus they have no way to board the
plane to Canada without either PR Card or Travel Document as they don't have
valid landing record.

I stand corrected. This http://www.canadanet.or.jp/i_v/fees/pr_e_0203.pdf
clarifies it.

my friend called CIC today, Basically, they gave him a fax number
asking him to send the postpone request in writing. Once I'm back, I
must personally give
them a call immediately for another appointment. As to how I can come
back to Canada, as long as I come back before 12/31/2003, I can just
use my landing paper (the white sheet) and my passport. is that true?

Look at your landing paper. Is it stamped "Not Valid for Travel"? If so, I think that answers your question with a resounding no.

You don't have a landing record (form IMM 1000) as you landed last March.
Unless you were issued IMM 1000 prior to June 28th - but in such case it
would be stamped "Not Valid for Travel". You won't be able to board the
plane to Canada without PR Card, valid for travel IMM 1000 or Travel
Document.

Andrew,
My "GOT IT" date was in July 2002 and I was issued the IMM 1000 rather than
the stamp in the visa. Thus when I landed, they attached the IMM page to my
passport and stamped it "not for travel". I understand the implication for
boarding commercial carriers, but do I need a Travel Document to enter
Canada even if I cross the border by car(as I am in the US)?
Also, do you (or anyone reading this post!) know if I can get a travel
document issued within Canada if I need to travel before the receipt of the
PR card ?

thanks

If crossing from US then you may use your IMM 1000 even if stamped "not
valid for travel", although expect some grilling as IMM 1000 is not a proof
of your PR status.

Travel Document can only be applied for outside Canada. If you landed last
year (after June 28) then you should already have your PR Card - why you
don't have it?
