Default Leaving Canada/coming back in during application process?

Long story short: been in Canada 5 1/2 years, got messed about a LOT by immigration but finally have it sorted... applied to permanent residence on common law sponsorship. Sponsor has been approved... currently waiting for the powers that be to give me a decision.

BUT I have an important business trip coming up end of April and I'm hoping to finally be able to go back home to visit (first time since I moved here in 2007!) in the summer.

My friend who is a permanent resident (moved here from the US) recently left the country with an expired PR card but had proof she'd applied for a new one when she left and was allowed back in with her proof of application.

Of course I'm sure most of you would advise to play it safe and wait for my PR card to finally arrive but I'm curious to see if anyone thinks the above would work for me? Understandably I'm very homesick and a trip home is much needed so I wanted to gauge your experienced opinions on this and see if anyone thinks it'd work... if it could I'd be the happiest little brit in Canada.

If not, well no worse off than I am now!

Thanks

(if this is in the wrong section feel free to move... I checked around for other threads that answered this but couldn't find anything. If I didn't check far back enough let me know!)

I did move it - anything visa related belongs in the immi section, but no worries.

You say you've been in Canada for over 5 years, what's your current status? Are you on a valid visitor visa?

So are you a current permanent resident with an expired card or are you a visitor awaiting your first permanent resident card?

Thanks for putting it in the right place!

I'm on a temporary work permit awaiting a decision on my permanent residency application (common law sponsor).

They lost my application for work permit extension in Vegreville for 2 1/2 years hence why it's taken so long but I got it all sorted now... just awaiting a decision.

When does your current work permit expire? As the application is in process you only have temporary resident status as either a visitor or worker and you could be refused entry anytime you leave Canada if found inadmissible.
Not usual but COULD so as long as you have valid status unless IMPLIED then you can leave and return.

It ran out about 2 months after I applied so I'm on implied... so better not to risk it then?

As soon as you leave Canada you lose your implied status.

Yes. Dont risk it. You dont have a current permit. It will be worth it just to hang on and have a nice long visit when the PR decision is made. I know the waiting is unbearable but hang in there. All the best.
