Default Language Test

Can anyone tell me what is the best way to get around language tests please? I have completed a degree and then a post grad and im now a teacher. Seems daft that i still have to have some proof of language tests? My partner has also lived here all his life but dosen't possess any formal qualifications. Can anyone advise please?

My understanding is that if you are british born, educated, employed etc etc then there is no need for language tests. Certainly we have not taken them. We were advised to do a submission letter giving details and examples of how we had used the english language to substantiate our claimed level of competence.
