Default Justifying career when self-employed

Hi,

I currently work for a company as a Control Systems Design Engineer, however I've worked my way up to this level from an Electrical/Electronic apprentice so have all of the qualifications required to work as an electrician.

After consulting the list of skilled workers I noticed that my current role is not on the list, but Electrician is. I was thinking about starting my own business where I'd do evening and weekend work as an electrician in preparation for my planned move to Canada. I have friends who constantly need work done as they own carpentry businesses.

I'll be doing this so that I can claim that I have been working as an Electrician for a few years (I need to wait 3 years for partner to finish her degree). Does anyone see any reason why this wouldn't work? Are there problems with claiming a role if you're self-employed? Thanks for any help.

Ross

I know someone who got their visa as self-employed. Not sure of ins and outs but she had to show proof of being self-employed in the desired occupation full time for a year - believe she had her accounts and tax records notarized and it was accepted.

That probably was prior to 2002, for self employed category,
now

Relevant experience is defined as:

* participation at a world-class level in cultural activities or athletics
* farm management experience or
* self-employment in cultural activities or athletics.

The OP would have to show that s/he has actually worked and apprenticed as an electrician to qualify.

The visas arrived this month. Her job is on the list of 38 occupations but she has been self-employed in this capacity for past eight years. Having said that, she did do a year as employed in the last ten.
