Default Joining my partner in Canada (BC) Help needed!!

Hi all, I have just discovered this forum and this is my first post on here (so please be kind & patient.)

I would like to join my long term partner in Western Canada and am struggling to discern the best route. I have read many threads on here and some interesting posts relating to moving to Canada etc.

Though I have a vocational qualification, (NVQ 2) equivalent to 3 GCSE's apparently, and over 20yrs broad experience in construction as a self employed Carpenter, I have not 'officially' worked in the last 5yrs as I have been caring for a family member. So may not be eligible for the FST program as you need to have worked 2yrs in the last 5?

I was born and raised in the UK, I just turned 44. My partner lives and works FT in BC (Nisga Nation) and gained citizenship almost a year ago to the day. (Originally from Catalunya)

I received notification about a post on a job search site I am signed upto today (Indeed Jobs) for shuttering Carpenters needed in Vancouver but appears to be specifically aimed at 18-35yr old via IEC scheme, If I've understood details of requirements correctly. I may not be eligible for the specifics of job requirements too. I've emailed the company so will await response. But as I understand I fall outside of this program due to age anyway.

Also my CSCS card has probably ran out now (but could reapply if necessary.

My partner would consider relocating to Alberta if need be, and is in specialist teaching role so should be able to find a new post if necessary, but for sure we both would prefer to aim for Western Canada.

Any suggestions from fellow chippies, UK residents or advice surrounding possible/best route/s.

Thanks Rob

Hi, welcome to BE.

From what you’ve said, it’s going to be tricky unless you go down the obvious route - is marriage an option?

Hi, thanks for your speedy reply. Erm, I guess it could be yes. Is that really the best chance I/we have?

From what you’ve said, your only other routes are a job offer (but in all honestly I think you’ll struggle to find an employer prepared to spend the money and wait to sponsor you without recent work experience), or a study permit ($$$$).

Would you by any chance have the funds to go over for an extended stay for a few months? You wouldn’t be able to work as a visitor and would need good insurance as you wouldn’t be eligible for healthcare, but you could then see if marriage is an option and maybe job hunt at the same time?
