Looking for advice!

My brother has recently been applying for jobs in Calgary and to his suprise has received a job offer within an architectural practice. In addition his wife is a nurse.....

He is not sure what is the quickest route to take for visa or by which method is best in terms of timescales.

Need help.

Default Re: Job offer in Calgary

Hope this helps:

If nurse is UK RGN, will need to get certification from Alberta nursing authority to have UK training and experience assessed to meet Canadian standards. May entail 3-6 month wait even if straightforward case, longer if hassles ensue, e.g. old transcripts of training etc (yes they need to see all those plus subsequent training plus call off for your references etc etc).

Other than that, once registered and awaiting exam, can work on interim nursing permit. Getting nursing job offer approved by HRDC should be easy enough, nursing recruiters in Alberta will assist with placement. The recruiters are very influential, once you are 'in' with one of them they are worth their weight in gold, and they do not charge you a placement fee. Do not trust anyone who tries to raise a fee, for work or consultation in nurse placement field. Thompson Regional Health Authority (hospitals in/near Calgary) were offering up to $5k relocation assistance last year.

Hope this helps, if you have more questions ref nursing applications and process, the Mrs will be happy to help, just send a PM.

Cheers,

Rich.

Quickest is for the employer to get a "temporary" work permit, but that would require that they demonstrate to HRDC that they could not find a suitable candidate in canada after looking for (3? or 6?) months. Once the job offer has been validated by HRDC you can get the work permit...takes about 6 weeks give or take, maybe 2-3 months or less total.

Provincial Nomination program for Alberta is also a possibility. I dont know exactly how that works though.

If they cant meet the HRDC requirements the job offer may still be good for additional points for skilled worker PR visa. PR through London CHC is taking anything up to and beyond 2 years to process, and there is no gaurantee the job will stay open for that long. Its an encouraging sign though that he has the offer.

Work permit is pretty much as good as PR, but with serious restriction that its only any good for that one job. Once you have the work pemit you could apply for PR through Buffallo (assuming you can visit the US without probs), and that seems faster than London, plus you would already be here in Canada.
