Default Income threshold and tax returns for sponsoring parents

Could someone tell me how many tax returns do you need to sponsor father and mother as PR; and what is the minimum income you have to have on every individual T4 to support their application? I looked up on CIC's website but the information given does not seem very clear on the progressive income requirement for the previous 3 consecutive years.

So in this particular case, this person came to Canada on PR in 2013 as single but later got married to a Canadian who is now his dependant. He filed 2 tax returns as a single person in 2014 and 2015 respectively when he had no dependants, and is now preparing to file his 3rd tax return in 2016 with one dependant.

So my fist question is can this person apply with his 2014, 2015, and 2016 Notice of Assessments in 2016 (i.e. for the tax years of 2013, 2014, and 2015)?

And secondly, what income does he need to have on his T4 in 2015 to meet sponsorship eligibility now that he has a dependant?

Thirdly, does he need to maintain a minimum income for four persons in all 3 years even though he did not have a dependant until 2015?

No, because applications for 2016 are closed already, so he can't apply until 2017. But it any event, CIC say the following in the application guide - "Note: If you are applying in 2016, you must provide proof of income from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the taxation years of 2014, 2013 and 2012."

There's no figure for 2015 yet, but in 2014 it would have been $57125 plus 30%, so $74262.50 by my calculations (caveat: my maths is atrocious!). So figure a bit more than that to allow for the annual increase.

Not sure on this one, but I believe so - hopefully somebody else can clarify.

HTH.

See below:

The minimum necessary income requirement, which you must meet for each of the three years is equal to the Low Income Cut-off s (LICOs) plus 30% ,taking into account the number of family members for whom you are or will be financially responsible.

Thanks for the response. Just looking at the CIC website, the table is titled "Federal Income Table for Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship" - so doesn't that mean it is already the Low Income Cut-Off plus 30%? $74,000 seems too high

This would suggest that you are correct, although it is for Calgary: Low Income Cut Off

As does this expert's site: "Expert"

Yes, the table within the Instruction Guide for Parents/Grandparents includes the extra 30%.

It says:

Federal Income Table for sponsors of parents and grandparents

The following table applies to residents of all provinces except Quebec. For each of the three consecutive taxation years preceding the date on which the application is submitted to CIC, the sponsor (and co-signer, if applicable) must meet the Minimum Necessary Income, which is based on the Low Income Cut-offs plus 30%.

PS: you can double check this by searching for the LICO figures for 2014 or even 2016 as you will see that these figures are lower.

Thank you so much for this advice. The 2015 figures have not been released yet but as of now he needs $57125 minimum to able to sponsor his parents in 2016 when the new intake opens.

The application period for 2016 is already closed:

Notice – Closing of the parent and grandparent application period

You may want to look into the supervisa:

Parent and grandparent super visa

See, told you my maths was rubbish!

I'm assuming that you mean 2017 - as I said above, he's missed the boat for 2016 already.

There again our newly elected Liberal Govt have promised to double the number of spots available but no indications if they will add another 5000 this year or wait until 2017.
After this years stories of couriers charging up to $400 to deliver your application one wonders if this will change. Will CIC hold back some applications or figure out another way of making this fair?
Perhaps we can be like the USA who have their green card lottery and do the same with parental/grand parent sponsorship

So does the income threshold vary from city to city or from province to province?

1. IRC accepted 10K applications, but only only going to process the first 5K and wait on the others to determine if the Libs are going to change the Regulations this year.
