Default Immigrants default on $1.7M in federal loans

News Item: The federal government last year lost more than
$1.7-million worth of loans to immigrants and refugees -- in many
cases because delinquent borrowers either returned to their homeland
or inexplicably disappeared.
Between April, 2001, and April, 2002, Citizenship and Immigration
Canada swallowed the outstanding balances for 3,394 loans, some dating
back to the 1980s.

While more than 2,300 of those accounts were in arrears for less than
$5 each, a large chunk of the outstanding cash -- nearly $1.5-million
-- was borrowed by 715 immigrants for which "all reasonable collection
actions have been exhausted," the documents read.

Another 64 people, who owed a combined total of $119,876.67, "cannot
be located." One of them owed more than $12,000, the documents show.

The financial records, which for privacy reasons do not identify any
of the borrowers' names, also indicate significant losses because
people died ($59,657), filed for bankruptcy ($74,454) or were
repatriated ($11,230).

MY TAKE: This program should be reviewed to restrict applicants who
are really trustworthy. Imagine a WOG from Pakistan applying for a
loan with the fereral governement: HIS INTENTIONS ARE FIRST AND
FOREMOST TO DECEIVE AND STEAL THE MONEY from Canadian taxpayers. He
will send the back back to his dusty village in pakistan . Or worst
this money could be chanelled to religious organization that are
mainly a front for terrorist groups in the mozlem world. These
immigrants using our liberal immigration system to benefit themselves.
They do not look or act like gentlemen. Immigration Canada should make
some major changes in the way they deal with thrid world immigrants !
