Default Illegal stay in Canada

Hi,

I'm a Mexican who came to Canada two years ago with a tourist visa. My visa was for one month but I decided to stay in Canada.
I did get a social insurance number and was able to work legally in canada, but I wonder if there is a way that I can become an immigrant, and if I have been staying illegaly in canada how come they did give me a social insurance number to work!?

I appreciate your help,

Thank you

What is the first digit of your SIN?

If it is 9 then it indicates that you are not a Canadian citizen or PR and that you
need proper authorization to work. If it starts with any other digit that means you
have obtained SIN fraudulently and may be criminally charged. SIN is not a work
authorization and you cannot work in Canada if you don't have proper employment
authorization.

If you want to apply for Canadian PR visa then get out of Canada as soon as you can
before you are caught and deported as your lack of status here for 2 years is
impossible to fix now.

Maybe a refugee claimant???

I don't think Canada issues S.I.N. card to visitors without employment authorization.

SIN can be issued to visitors in Canada, the number will start with a "9" which is
supposed to be a flag to the employer that the person requires an Employment
authorization to work. A Mexican citizen who waits for 2 years prior to claiming
Refugee status has a chance between slim and nil of being found a refugee. The IRB
has a tendency to look askance at claimants who don't claim at the earliest
opportunity.
