Default IELTS not mandatory anymore ??

Hi,
There was a news under "news In Brief" on 4th june 2008 Metro newspaper that Ottawa has dropped its idea of making all immigrants take a British-made language test to get into the country." They realized the ludicrousness of it" Alex Stojicevic, chair of the immigration section of the Canadian Bar Association said Yesterday.

Can someone throw more light on this.

Thanks,
Sbhusan

It means they'll be dropping the requirement for people who are native speakers, who can just send a letter attesting to their competence. You, from India, will still have to take the IELTS.

But for non-native speakers, what is the threshold of IELTS required?
Because the existing skilled workers scheme, if you can take 67 marks, you are no need to take IELTS exam even you are not native speaker!

Read all posts from poster "immigrants", particularly those arguing about IELTS and you'll understand.

Poster stated for example as a good thing that he can score 5.0 on IELTS. Unfortunately 5.0 score means (and English proficiency in his posts prove it) that his English is not so good. With new changes to the law which will bring among other things occupation and language proficiency based priorities poster will need a lot of luck to get through the process with positive outcome and in relatively standard processing time.
