My husband is a Canadian PR (I'm a citizen). He landed in May 2006, but did not mover permanently until October 2006 (we had to sell our house in the UK etc.).

I'm assuming that we can count from the day of landing as opposed to the day he took up permanent residence?

Deducting the time spent outside of Canada in the last 3 years, it looks like he can apply in early December (he's spent 6 weeks out of the country).

How strict is this rule? Since it takes so long to process an application for citizenship, does it really matter if he applies in October instead of December?

Just trying to figure things out.

Really strict, if you apply with less than 1095, you will end up with an interview with the citizenship judge, adds about 8-12 months to the application. He needs physical residency, So he requires 1095 days of living in Canada between the date of "landing" and the date of the application.

And any nights spent out of Canada in that time counts against the 1095 days. So spend 1 night in the US, now 1096 days since taking up residency etc.

Also the days spent in Canada between applying for PR and landing count (with 0.5 weighting) to your physical residency requirement for citizenship.

I met a pensioner [69 yrs old] at the seniors centre . He,s from Sheffield and lost his wife about 10 yrs ago. He applied to move to Canada to live with his son.
He got landed in Nov 2005 but has been back to England 3 times - 6months, 2 months and 7 months .Thats a total of 15 months out of Canada in 4 yrs.

To apply for citizenship can he just make up the days to reach 1095 or will his time in Canada start again so that he has to do 1095 days again during the next 4 yrs .

He needs about another 3/4 months of residing in Canada, then he should have 3 years residence in the 4 years prior to the date of the application.

But his 4 yrs is up this month . To make up his 1095 days it will take another 3-4 months meaning he will be over the 4 yrs period .
will he be eligble for citizenship in 3-4 months having completed his 1095 days
in 4yrs + 4 months ?

Sorry to jump in...I've been in Canada 19 months so far on a tourist/temp resident visa. My passport with my PR visa is due back shortly, so does that mean I've already got 9.5 months that I can count, or just from when I applied for PR in July 2009?

Cheers!

Take a deep breath, think it out. It is not every 4 year period, he just keeps counting backward until he has 1095 days from the date of application in the previous 4 years. Use the citizenship calculator to figure it out. http://services3.cic.gc.ca/rescalc/r...ew.do?&lang=en

Also if you've been out of the country for 2 weeks how do they know? Do they keep tabs on you for every trip out and back or is it a system of trust? I am due to apply at the end of the summer. September!
