Default How long does it take to renew a visitor visa to Canada if applied within Canada?

Help please! Thanks very much!

I am a visa student in Toronto, Canada. My citizenship is Taiwan,
R.O.C. My student visa will expire in September 2003. I am planning to
travel to Japan on May 31 and I just realized my Canadian visitor visa
has already expired. I assume Canada customs won't allow me to come
back to Canada if without a valid visitor visa.

If I want to renew my Canadian visitor visa now in Toronto, how long
will it take?

You cannot "renew" your visitor visa in Canada. Once you leave Canada you
need to apply for new visitor visa through Canadian visa post outside
Canada.

This is according to CIC.

"This application is for temporary residents who are already in Canada as
visitors, students or workers, and wish to extend their stay, change the
conditions of their stay, change their type of temporary status, or correct
problems with their status. It is important to apply for the extension before
the expiry of your status.

Mail the application to the Case Processing Centre (CPC) in Vegreville,
Alberta."

Here you err grievously. The student from Taiwan will require a new visa
issued overseas in order to return to Canada. He cannot obtain it while in
Canada. He would have to apply at the embassy in tokyo.

You have no idea what question was all about. Rita asked how to renew her
visa, not how to obtain extension of stay. She has student permit valid
through September thus she can stay here that long regardless expiration of
her visitor visa. But she wants to travel to Japan in May - thus she will
need new visitor visa to return to Canada as student permit is not valid for
re-entry. And visitor visas can only be applied for and issued outside
Canada.

Please refrain from giving any immigration advice as you obviously have no
idea about the difference between visitor visa and extension of stay.

I just quoted what's inside CIC website. Again:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/visitor.html

"This application is for temporary residents who are already in Canada
asvisitors, students or workers, and wish to extend their stay, change the
conditions of their stay, change their type of temporary status, or
correct problems with their status. It is important to apply for the extension
before the expiry of your status. Mail the application to the Case Processing
Centre (CPC) in Vegreville,
Alberta."

I'm not telling what anybody should do.

I simply quoted CIC website,
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/visitor.html

And exactly what it means by quoting directly from website, if it means
extension of stay then it;s for extension of stay.

But the question was not about extension of stay - it was about visitor visa
renewal. Thus you've mislead Rita with your erroneous answer. Simply - wrong
answer. It doesn't matter that you quoted exactly what CIC website says if
such quote doesn't apply to the question asked, period.

Anyone can quote anything from CIC site - but only those who can read
and understand the question and know what section of the law will
answer that question will be able to apply proper quote to the
question asked.

Obviously you can't do any of the above dear "English language
teacher" - get lost!!!!

Hi guys:

I am Rita's friend and on behalf from Rita, thank you very much for the
input.
Actually, she is currently in Canada and will think about go to Japan in May
31
Her student visa permit will be expired in Sept, 03, but unfortunalty her
visitor visa
was expired since Oct, 02. She couldn't apply Japan visitor visa now
because she
doesn't have vaild canadian visitor visa. The question is will she be
possible to renew her visitor
visa (I think it will consider RENEW, not EXTEND, since it's already
expired, but I am not too sure about
the term and procedure) while in Canada? or she has to leave the contury to
renew (re-apply) visitor visa once again?
If she needs to leave the contury to renew (re-apply) visitor visa, can she
go to visa office in Buffalo, NY since it closest to
her or else where? If that can be done, how long it's gonna take? is any
risk involve? Although she has US visitor visa but
she was afraid she couldn't return to Canada if somehow her canada visitor
visa will be rejected...

Any advise and suggestion? Thank you very much...She is kind of in rush now
and worry..

Mic

The best way if she is in real rush, is to go to her nearest CIC office for
assistance.

No, she cannot apply for new visitor visa in Canada - visitor visas can only
be applied for and issued abroad. She may go to US to apply for one or she
may just try to do it through the mail without leaving Canada and go to US
only if interview is required. But with her valid student permit she
shouldn't have any problems getting her new visa from Canadian consulate in
US by mail.
