Hi:

I'm the U.S. Resident and have filed for Canadian residency as an Independent
immigrant six months ago. In the middle of October, I receved a letter with the file
number, which said that the assessment process will take up to 30 weeks. When I
called the number given on the letter to provide my new address info, I asked how
long the process would take and was told it may take up to 22 months.

Does this sound correct? Does anybody know how long it takes now to get the answer on
the assessment of your file?

Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jolanta

Hi:

What you have received is a standard letter. Processing times can greatly differ.
Complex cases generally take longer to process..

Yours truly, Ingrid Y. Chen, B.A., LL.B.

If you are successful, you will not be granted residency, you will be given an
immigrant visa. Only once you actually come to Canada and establish yourself here do
you actually become a resident.

The length of time it takes to get an answer depends on many factors, the main one
being how long the security clearance takes. If you have lived only in the United
States, then the process will be much faster. Since you state that you are a
resident, not a citizen, I assume that you emigrated to the US.

Depending on which country (and how many) you lived in before, it could take quite a
bit longer than the first answer of 30 weeks.

If you post your citizenship, and which other countries you have lived in for a
period of six months or more since turning 18, then perhaps others in similar
situations can assist you further.

Good luck, Charlotte
