I wondered whether you could help me, help a friend

He met a lady in 2009(he is british, she is canadain).Between 2009 and 2012 he visited canada for a few months a year. They married in 2012 and after a honeymoon etc, he went back to the uk.

He arrived back in Jan 2013 intending to be here 6 months, and also apply for permanent residence with her sponsoring him. He has been told different things by different people. He has not applied as yet but had his medical and police check from the uk done. The lady is also not working so they survive on his small income from the uk.

What is ther best way forward for him. Is there a visa he should apply for? Does she need an independent income to sponsor him?.

I stayed here for 18 months as a visitor, having been granted two , six month extensions. He should be able to stay with her if he is being sponsored ( I did , I'm British too ) but I thought she would need to prove she was able to financially support him ? My Canadian spouse had to..
