Default help - hepatitis C

I posted about this before with a more obscure topic, but my OH is getting himself into a bit of a panic so I'm being more obvious in the hope that someone has been through the same thing.

My OH contracted Hep C some time ago, probably 10-15 years ago. Back then they didn't really do anything about it (!) so he recovered slowly at home and that was that. He has never been re-tested, he's never had any problems - don't worry he's also never given blood or put himself on the donor register!

We have an application in the early stages, and he's started to worry about the medical and what might happen. He's going for a blood test with his doctor next week so find out what the status is, and I understand there are treatments available now that were not around 10 years ago.

He is panicking that this is going to be the spanner in the works that stops us from being able to go. I know the general medical rules are if it's going to cost Canada $5000/yr then they don't like to let you in... surely this is not that sort of case? But I've no idea, and at this waiting stage anything remotely negative becomes huge. I think OH is starting to worry himself sick about it so I'd appreciate any thoughts or information.
Thanks!

According to the DMP handbook he may be required to submit to testing.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english//resour...ix-02.asp#appC idappC

(available in pdf: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english//pdf/pu...ndbook2009.pdf )

Medical Report: Section B
Functional Inquiry, Background Information and Applicant’s Declaration and
IMM 5419 (08-1998) E Section C (cont)

Question 8: Hepatitis
When there is a history of hepatitis in those older than 15 years of age, the details from the applicant should include the date and type of hepatitis, if known.

Note: If the applicant is not excessive demand exempt, then the results of serum AST and ALT should be provided. If these are abnormal (greater than 1.5 X normal value), then a specialist’s report including hepatitis C antibodies and hepatitis B surface antigen should be provided

Special Questions of Concern

Is there any personal / family history of a condition which might
reasonably lead to the requirement, now or in the future, for
Organ Transplantation or Dialysis? (e.g. diabetic / lupus
nephropathy, pyelonephritis, family history or personal history of
polycystic kidney disease, chronic active hepatitis or hepatitis
carrier state
)

I would find out from his Doctor what his prognosis is and ask for treatment if necessary. I believe it is the treatment cost rather than the actual disease that could render him inadmissible. He could, perhaps, get a specialist's report and submit it too.

There are several helpful websites around that give information, which may be useful when trying to ascertain the cost (if any) of treatment.

There are drug Benefit programs in force in some provinces too:

http://www.hepcontario.ca/en/treatment.html / http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/forms/odb_fm.aspx

I don't know whether this will cause a refusal or not, sorry.

Good luck!

Edit: You may be required to undergo testing as well.

Thanks very much for the info... my stomach is also in knots now! I did suggest he get his Hep C status checked out a while ago but he didn't get round to it... it's not good not knowing with plans in the pipeline!
If there is treatment available, we would certainly get that here before going over - we're at early application stages so even 6 months treatment would not be a problem.

as if it wasn't stressful enough

Sorry to hear that, I can only imagine the stress you both must be suffering.

The only grain of comfort I can give you is that I have definitely read about other people getting residency while carrying Hepatitis on other Immigration Forums.

Best of luck!

There is treatment available, it normally takes around 6 months to complete it, so you would be fine from that angle.

As to Immigration, they permit people with HIV to emigrate here - and I have also read of Hep C being admitted, so all is not lost - just make sure he goes to the doctors and gets it all sorted!

Don't stress out ...

thanks for the replies.. I am trying to be calm If HIV+ people can emigrate then surely it will be OK... His doctor's appt is next week so we will just have to tear our hair out till then... and then of course tear out some more whilst waiting for the results!

be calm......
