health insurance for spouse awaiting PR approval

Dear any and all

My wife just sent away her PR application (I am her sponsor) and the other night we
had a health scare and had to spend the night in hospital. While this will naturally
cost us a lot and there's nothing we can do about that, what can we do for the near
future while we are waiting for her approval in principle (and then the 3 month wait
after that for OHIP) regarding health insurance for her?

What private companies are available? The site for Blue Cross in Ontario is down:
does anyone know how to reach them? Has anyone had any experience with Imagine
Insurance?

Sorry to seem so scattered. I appreciate your help tremendously.

Does your employer offer medical coverage for you? If so, then your wife might be
covered also.

Keep in mind that most medical coverage offered by employers in Canada is meant to
supplement the provincial medical insurance system, not replace it. It generally
covers the things that a person's provincial insurance doesn't.

It's possible, also, that employer based coverage will not cover a person who is
ineligible for provincial medical coverage. Check with the carrier.

You can buy emergency medical insurance for visitors to Canada from almost any
insurance company in Canada, or your bank's (or another financial institution's)
insurance subsidiary. Many insurance companies and insurance brokers re-sell
Emergency Hospital and Medical Expense Insurance for Visitors to Canada offered by
T.I.C. Travel Insurance Coordinators (http://www.tic-agencies.com/ or 1-800-465-4279
or 1-800-663-4494).

You can examine the details of T.I.C.'s coverage at
http://www.tic-agencies.com/customer.../visitors.html

The Co-operators (http://www.cooperators.ca/ or 1-800-265-2612) is one Canadian
insurance company that re-sells T.I.C.'s emergency medical insurance. You can find
the nearest Co-operators Agent through your local telephone directory, or at
http://www.cooperators.ca/english/ag...tor/index.html

If you contact and meet with an insurance agent or broker quickly, get friendly with
them, promise to buy all your home, auto, life, farm or business insurance from them
for the rest of your life and beg them to write an insurance policy with an earlier
start date, you just might have it apply retroactively and cover your wife's
emergency hospital stay. It's worth trying! Good luck!

I know that coverage varies from company to company, but my husbands company is with
Sun, and they were very good about covering both my children and my-self, untill we
got our PR.
