Default Health Insurance Card

Can anyone tell me how long does it take to get Health Insurance Card (HIC) after someone lands Canada?

What happens if somebody gets sick before getting HIC?

Most (but not all) provinces have a three month waiting period after landing till you are elligable. To get the card go to the local (OHIP for Ontario) regional office. Call the 800 number in the blue pages for details when you arrive. Its a photocard like a drivers license. They will give you a temporary card on the day, and the permanent one takes a week or two to arrive.

Private health insurance is strongly recomended during the waiting time. three or four companies that can provide coverage are listed at the settlement.org website. It will cost a couple of hundred $.

http://www.settlement.org/site/HE/insurance.asp

http://www.settlement.org/sys/faqs_d...faq_id=4000329

If you risk not having insurance it will get very expensive if you get sick. Potentialls $thousands per day if you end up ion hospital.

Hope this helps

In most Provinces your health coverage starts after 3 months of residency in the particular Province. Thus buy yourself a 3 months travel insurance for this waiting period.

Check with the Province of your destination to find out what is the waiting time and secure travel insurance for that period.

Travel insurance may be a mistake, as they tend to want to repatriate you to your "home" country. I'm sure you meant visitors/newcommers insurance.

Which provinces do not have the waiting period?

Alberta for example for most of new immigrants doesn't have a waiting period (but has it for those moving from another Province).

Do private insurance companies cover one if one is pregnant? To clarify further, my wife is due in Jan 05 and we'll be covered by the state insurance by then but between now and then, for her regular check-ups and everything, we need to have insurance. Do private companies cover it?

Thank you.

It won't be easy (if possible at all) to find insurance company offering any coverage for pre-existing conditions.

We were not successfull finding private insurance with a preexisting pregnancy, but the company that transferred us to canada picked up the bills.

You could also try to find a certified midwife. in 2000 in ontario the check ups and delivery were free of charge (except for the lab work and hospital if needed)

All the best for your baby

Mr. Miller,

Question about the 3 months waiting period for health insurance. What if I land in Ontario, stay for one month, go on vacation outside canada for 2 months and then come back. Does this count as 3 months? or do I have to be physicaly in Ontario for 3 months before I can use my health insurance card?

Thanks alot,

That would work.

Remember though that to get back into canada on a commercial carrier you need to have your PR card or you may not get back in!

Assuming you have your PR card, you should have no problem getting back in. Once you go and apply for your health card, your coverage will start 3 months after the day you became a PR, what you do after that doesn't affect your OHIP (ontario ) application, because you are already in the system.

Your card will be sent to you after 3 months, nice looking thing it is too Used mine for the first time last month, when I had a chesty cough problem, went to a local clinic, had x-ray done ( free ) straight away, and got a prescription for it.

Doesnt matter really, before means you are covered when you land though. usually 2-300 bux. There are some links (for ontario) at http://www.settlement.org/sys/faqs_d...faq_id=4000329

Trent health has been recomended here before for what its worth, otherwise employers may arrange something for new transfers etc.
