Has anyone applied the UK as a skilled worker?

Hi

I would like to immigrate to Canada under the Skilled worker category. I
currently work in IT in the UK, and apparently meet the points requirement.

I have spoken to a couple of companies workincanada.ca, workpermit.com who
agree to find employment, but want to charge me about $4000 for the
privilege. I want to apply for jobs myself, I have heard that there is an
IT jobs shortage in Canada and that companies will take you on, perhaps bend
the rules a little bit and get you a Visa.

Is this the case? Has anyone done this? I would ideally like to work in
BC, does anybody have an idea of a good starting point? Perhaps a good
jobsite that deal with international applications?

If anyone has done this, and has any advice of what to do and how to do it,
it would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Gus

Re: Has anyone applied the UK as a skilled worker?

Hi Gus,

I'm from the UK and applying as a skilled worker, I'm a hairdresser so I
can't help you with IT stuff unfortunately. I have got the impression from
the newsgroup that there is a shortage of jobs in IT in Canada, I'm sure
someone in the group can fill you in on this.

Do you need to have a job offer/work visa to have enough points to emigrate?

If so then your employer will have to go through HRDC approval for you to be
awarded the points. If you want a work visa I'm sure your employer has to
prove that the job has been offered to a Canadian Citizen or PR of Canada
before it's been offered to you, the experts on here can give you more
details on this.

I would say a good starting point is to get out to BC and check it out for
jobs etc, or maybe you already have. I've been to Ontario a couple of times,
not much, but felt like a didn't want to come back (holiday blues I
suppose). I did get to speak to a few people about jobs and feel quite
confident I should be working in a salon when I get out there.

Good Luck,

Alison.
