Hi Friends,

I'm currently working in the united states and will be
applying for an immigrant visa under the independent category through the buffalo office. As per the Buffalo office timelines, it should take
anything between 8 to 12 months to get my immigrant visa. As of now, I'am applying as an unmarried individual. What would i need to do in case I get married before the immigrant visa is issued to me. Also, please let me know if it would slow down my paper processing.

All answers highly appreciated.

Thanks,
chou.

First of all 8 to 12 months timeline in Buffalo doesn't apply to all applications. If
you are in the US for rather short period of time and you are a national of or
previously resided in one of the country where background/security check takes
forever your timeline may be anywhere from 12 to 20+ months.

If you will marry during the process then you should immediately notify Buffalo and
submit your wife's application with all required documents and fees. Depending on the
stage of your application process at that time and your wife's nationality this may
cause few to several months delay in the overall process. If you get married after
your visa is issued but before landing in Canada then you must return your visa (it
will be invalid as was issued to a single person) with your wife's application.

You would certainly have to inform the visa office if you marry or intend to marry
before you land in Canada. Failure to do so can only cause you great difficulties
later. Jim Humphries, former visa officer
