I sponsored my mom and younger brother and now they have received
their visas in pakistan. they are planning to land in toronto first
week of september. i sponsored them, however, due to business trip
abroad i will not be able to receive them. my other brother who is
also a landed immigrant will recieve them. my questions are:
a. is it ok for me not to be in canada when they arrive. noting that i
am the sponsor.
b. they will bring a list of "goods to follow". however they will come
with few personal belongings now. should my mom also declare all her
properties and assets outside of canada in that list so that when she
finally disposes them, she can transfer money without problem/tax?
c. what are the procedure at airport for my mom/brother to enter
country. they are coming from pakistan.
d. any other relevant info?
thanks a lot for your early response.

Hi Nad
You do not have to be on hand to meet your relatives. She does not have to declare her assets. Once they are sold she would have to pay taxes on the gain between their value on the date of her landing and when they are sold. They should ensure that they inform Customs when they arrive that they are coming to be landed. They will be referred to Immigration where their documents will be checked and they will be questions if there has been any changes in their family composition since they were issued. They will have their photos taken for their PR Card. They have to supply an address where they want the card mailed to. Then they go to Customs Secondary where they have their accompanying goods list and list of goods to follow stamped. They should have 2 copies of each list. If either of them are carrying 10K or over in funds, these must be declared.
