Default Extending Work Permit at POE

My daughter recently received a Open Work Permit. However, as her Passport was expiring in May 2011, this was the date that the Work Permit ran to.
I presume that to extend the WP we would need to reapply and pay the $150 again.
As it took over 2 months to receive the first one, is it possible to go to any POE e.g. Niagra or Kingston to obtain the extension?

In theory it is acceptable to renew a TWP at the border, however the Immigration Officer may or may not be cooperative. If you apply via mail then between the existing permit expiring and the new permit being issued she will still be able to work as this counts as "implied status".

Implied status will cease either when the new permit is issued, rejected or if you leave Canada.

I think you have to pay $150 again.

You can, but if the Officer is feeling grumpy, may tell you that they are not staffed for that and to send the application to Vegreville. "You pays your money and you takes your chances"

Thanks for your replies.

She originally had a Student visa which ended in Sept this year when my husbands work permit ends. The new work permit states that she should leave Canada on 22nd May - the original expiry date of her old passport.

So, with Implied Status, she would still be able to live and work in Canada until the new one comes through?
Is it likely that an Employer would know of this or is there any information she could print off on the CIC site? It is just i have never heard of this before so i dont know anything about it.
This would be so much better than risking a 2 hour drive that ends up being a wasted journey!

Hopefully we will have PR by the time we get to September! Wishful Thinking!

Here is the CIC manual: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resourc...w/fw01-eng.pdf
On page 36 it talks about implied status. I assume she has a new passport now? All legal to keep working, might be a bit difficult to prove if changing employers though.
