Expiring PR Card

Expiring PR Card
Hello,
My existing PR Card is due to expire in February. I have applied for a renewal, but it looks like I won't get it before I leave for a trip to the UK in April.
What are my options? I know I can apply for an urgent renewal but the is no guarantee that I will receive it in time. Can I apply for a travel document?
Anyone else had this issue?
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Jim.
It is just a trip to the UK for holiday, but how do I prove my PR if my card has expired?

Any problems you might face could be with the airline if no valid PR card in your possession. There is a sticky thread on this subject.
If travelling on a UK passport back from the UK using a major carrier its unlikely to have the problem of being denied boarding. THAT is the potential problem.
Arriving back in Canada without a valid PR card is less of a problem as CBSA can verify your status but if you have to wait several hours in Immigration you might be saying I wish I had a valid PR card

Re: Expiring PR Card
I traveled to the US last month on an expired PR card (with Air Canada) and had no issues at all on my way back in. Worst part was spending 10 minutes in secondary immigration but nothing major.
Now, sorry to hijack the thread, i'm having to fly to San Francisco in less than 10 days time and still haven't got my PR card back after applying 2 months ago. Can i get a Travel Document while still in Canada and on this short notice? I'm flying Delta so don't want to risk not boarding the plane (although with delta it might not be a bad thing )
Former L, or Jim, and thoughts?

Urgent processing of a permanent resident card
If flying on Delta I wouldn't be too concerned if no PR card but there is still that risk. Producing a Canadian driving licence and other Canadian ID might also help if no valid PR card.

You can read this link for urgent processing

Re: Expiring PR Card
You'd have thought applying in October 2014 for a trip in April 2015 would be plenty of time.......

Re: Expiring PR Card
This isn't an issue for us until next year but I'm wondering how long you should give to renew your card? How far ahead of time should you apply?

Re: Expiring PR Card
I think the online guidance is to allow 6 months, but I'd personally allow more like 9 based on this thread...

izzi81, based on this:
Processing times: Permanent Resident Card
I would allow as much time as possible

Re: Expiring PR Card
Flew with Delta from San Francisco to Vancouver the other day. Nearly didn't make the flight as the boarding staff wanted to clarify my status since my PR card had expired. I have the expired card, drivers license, SIN card to show but not much else.
Luckily her colleague who didn't give a sh$t let me on just before they closed the doors.
Then arrived at YVR, headed to customs and got reamed out by the guard in secondary. I quote - "People like you should be thrown out of the country. What you have is a privilege and if you don't care about it, then leave" I asked him if he thinks it fair to have to wait 4 to 6 months for a new card, and he calmed down.
Two completely different experiences when travelling on an expired card. It's a pain in the ar$e.
If i hadn't been allowed to board the plane, my wife would have killed me.

Re: Expiring PR Card
I call CIC this am. We applied for our renewals on September 28th and ours still aren't back.
They are quoting 127 days for processing, apparently my application is 127 days tomorrow, they are processed now and I should have them in 2 about 2 weeks!
Our son travelled from NS to visit us in Alberta at Christmas with an expired PR card, he just made sure he had a ton of other ID including his UK Passport, they didn't even look at it.
If any application has gone over 127 you can call CIC and they will look intoit for you, they were super helpful today
