Default Experts, please advice -- I-94s not taken back at port of entry.

We landed in Canada in July-2003 as landed immigrants. We landed from
USA (we drove across the border). In US I was on H1 visa and my wife
had H4. We both have expired visas but have I-94s valid until 2005.
While crossing the border, at border port, the US and Canadian
immigration officials did not ask for our I-94 cards as they had to
take them back. We also forgot to ask about it as we were busy and
anxious about the Canadian immigration process. Now do I need to
contact US or Canadian immigration officials to return them? Has
anyone had this kind of experience before? Can anyone advice how
important is to return these I-94s?

Thanks in advance.
