Default I need some advice - sponsorship/PR times

My question is about sponsorship and PR. I intend to sponsor my conjugal partner to live in Canada. Am I right in saying that even though the sponsorship might be approved, we will still have to wait for the residency to be processed and approved? And if so, does this mean it could take over a year for the entire process??? ...or are the long waiting times due only to the backlog of applications?

Lastly, assuming the sponsorship is approved, is there any way my partner could move to Canada and work, prior to the PR being processed? So many questions....

Thanks!

Yes, even if you qualify as conjugal partners and sponsorship is approved your
partner will have to wait for the PR visa application to be processed. And
yes - depending from many factors (nationality, country of residence,
background, etc.) the entire process may take a year or longer. And long
processing time is only partially caused by the backlog - all necessary tasks
of the process must be concluded and it takes time. And your partner cannot
just move to Canada and work here - unless s/he obtains work permit after
finding HRDC validated job offer.

There may be some other options available but you didn't provide enough
information to even guess what can be done in your case.

Thanks Andrew, that's pretty much what I expected (feared!). I'll keep my fingers crossed for a speedy processing.
