You need to get driver's history record from the motor vehicle department at particular state from US; as some, rather most of the states dosen't allow motor vehicle department from canadian provinces to access their system. I going thorugh this process currently. I applied for history from NJ state.

You just need to present official letter (driver's history) in original from motor vehicle department + your original driver's license (expired license are acceptable within the one year from expiration date).

What if I have couple of speeding tickets? Does it impede the licence exchange?

I think it’s normal but main thing they are looking at is suspension or if your cause of major accident. Keep in mind to accept any document for exchange is all their discretion; you cann't challenge them by verbal or via court.
