1. If you read the CIC site regarding work/study permits and etas, you should have come across the following:
Should I apply for an eTA or a visa when I apply for a work permit?
No. Depending on your citizenship, you may need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or a visitor visa, as well as a work permit. Your eTA or visa will be issued to you at the same time as your work permit. You do not need to apply separately or to pay an additional fee.
I can see lots of grief with this!
Airlines will be able to see if you have an ETA as you check in. If you haven't , how is the airline check in person going to to able to tell what is a valid visa for Canada, a PR card is easy but student, TWP ??? They are not CBSA officers nor should they be expected to act as such, I wonder what they will do?
If the ETA is as smooth as the ESTA site it may be ok, but given CIC's track record...............!!!
I made a huge boob on our trip, I had renewed youngest pup's passport months early, and so he still had a " valid" ESTA until August in my mind and on their site, forgetting it's linked to his previous passport. When we tried to check in, I realized the disaster but we were able to apply and get the new ESTA in minutes, the lady at check in could also see it a couple of minutes later. In fact I saw later that there is a dedicated computer terminal for ESTAs near the check ins, which would have been quicker I think. I can't see CIC putting computers in airports anywhere!!!!

Well, my understanding would be that if someone's initial study/work permit had been issued prior to 1 August 2015, there would not be an eTA linked to it and so then the above would at least make me question whether a renewal after that date would have an eTA automatically linked to it.

Does anyone know the situation for someone with COPR who hasn't activated yet?
Do I fall into the following?
• A foreign worker with a valid work permit for Canada, which I obtained on or after August 1, 2015
I appreciate I'm not a PR yet, as I haven't 'landed' but I'm not sure if I fall into the above, or if this just applies to people with a permit for a specific job etc?
Does anyone know the situation for someone with COPR who hasn't activated yet?
Do I fall into the following?

From the CIC website
I have a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) and will travel to Canada. Do I need an eTA?
No. If you are from a visa-exempt country and have been issued a Confirmation of Permanent Residence document, you do not need an eTA.
