Default Entry to Canada without Travel Doc

Hi hoping someone can help. My situation is I am living with my Canadian husband in Uk, I have recently sent my PR card off for renewal which will take an age! However we need to go to canada in Nov and my card will not be back by then. Is there anywhere online that OFFICIALLY states that I can still enter on my UK passport as this is a visa exempt document. All I can see is info on a temp travel doc, but surely as we are living in the UK, have a UK passport and will have a return ticket I wouldn't need this? Has anyone been in this situation? Thanks

Do they even send PR cards outside Canada? Maybe it's different for renewals.

You'll still enter on your UK passport regardless. Looks like you'll need a travel document too.

You've likely read these...but just in case:
What happens if my permanent resident card expires while I am outside Canada?
I need to leave Canada and I do not have a permanent resident card. Can I later return to Canada without a PR card?

I suppose if it's a short trip over then you could just "act" like any other UK citizen and enter and leave as normal. My parents had PR in the past but never received their cards in the end. They came and went a few times just on their UK passports and no one ever said anything. Whether you should do that...well I don't know.

I would be astonished if a UK passport holding PR visiting canada briefly with their Canadian spouse, and then returning to the UK, traveling on a return ticket, was given any kind of hassle for not having the PR card, especially as its renewal is in process. To all intents and purposes you are just like every other UK tourist on the plane.

I honestly wouldnt bother with the hassle of the travel document, no one will want to see it.

Kinda my thinking too. By the book I guess you shouldn't do it but realistically I don't think it would be an issue (never was a problem for my parents for example as mentioned in my previous comment)

My PR card has been sent to Canada. I guess it is a case of if I risk it or not, however I have just thought I will prob come across an issue with regards to my name as it is different to my Pr card and old passport. Arghh this is so pathetic, I am a UK citizen on a visa exempt passport, so why oh why is my Canadian status overruling that. So frustrating. Thanks for your replies

Getting the one-time travel doc in London is easy, if time consuming. Otherwise, travelling to Canada, with the receipt for your PR card renewal, supporting documents for your name change, etc, is easy too.

Note that the name change etc supporting documents will probably be required for the travel doc.

If the overriding question is "can I enter Canada using a British passport without a valid PR card", the answer is yes (I've done it). All above caveats regarding supporting documents apply. The CBSA agent you encounter May or may not require supporting documents/supplementary evidence.

Great thank you for your help. I think for peace of mind I will apply for the doc, how long is it valid for? All it says on the website is that it is valid for one entry, no mention of length of validity. However my Sister in law called the call centre and they said it would be valid for 30 days only??!!

True, however, they would re-issue you with a travel document if you still meet the PR status, to re-enter Canada. At least around 10 years ago they did it, but it was a bit of a hassle. Don't know how it is today.

Valid for 30 days to travel to Canada not the amount of time you can stay.

Dont you have to attend the consulate in person to get it? Seems an unnecessary hassle to me.

It now appears that you submit an online application to the London Visa Application Centre (VAC) and processing takes 7 days.

It's not. Despite what CIC may infer, there is no mandate or requirement for a person who is a Canadian PR to use a PR Card to enter Canada. Look in the Immigration & Refugee Protection Act, it's not there. The PR Card is provided for as a travel document, but not the only travel document. This might change when Canada puts in place an electronic travel authority policy (2015 or so).

If you travel with a return ticket and a visa waiver passport, the question won't be asked (by the airline) and you don't have to volunteer the information. It won't be an issue at Immigration either.

Otherwise, then read:
