Default Electrician - help

Any UK trained electricians successfully made the jump to canada? Appreciate some advice and direction. In particular, whether I can do some distance-learning at a Canadian College to study for the requisite exams.

cheers

Paul

Ive been told that the exam can only be taken for the license once you have a social security no. . But there was a thread on here that gave an address to get the canadian & ontario electrical code books which I will once we have been contacted to go for medicals.
Depends on what state you are going to & what type of electrician you are ie for industrial license is voluntary in Ontario but most of better paid jobs want it. Other states have different rules

My hubby is an electrician. We have just received our visas and are about to land. Try doing a search on "Red Seal" these are inter provincial qualifications and there should be threads on it. Also try Google - there will be contacts & numbers & sources of text books etc. You can study before you go & get up to date with the regs over there.

Good Luck!!

Are you a qualified electrican in the uk??
It is not just what you know, but experience that helps!!!!

If you have the qualifications and the experience in the uk, then buy the books and read read etc
Before they allow you to sit the test in canada you have to provide all your cert from collage etc, letters from your employers explaining what you have done in the uk, and references, all on letter headed paper

IF they think that everything is alright they will allow you to sit your licence

REDSEAL is a apprent that lasts for 4/5 years, dont know if a uk person can go on this or not, better to ask them, they can only say no
If you need info for ministry etc of ontario just yell, ill PM them through

Best bet is looking on the general forum, a few of us have been successful, it is not difficult to hold down a job, just getting your foot in the door.

First, distinguish yourself as Industrial OR Construction.

Then approach the government agency/apprentice branch in your province of choice for advice, most of the stuff is on gov. websites.

I had a lot of luck, I had specialist skills that enabled me to get a work permit, but it was still a very very hard slog. For me, more stressful than getting PR.

Regards

Darren
