Default Do I need a U.S. passport if I am flying to Canada?

Hello,

I am a U.S. citizen and I am presently in Europe. I do not have my U.S.
passport (long story); however I have other U.S. government issued documents
(like birth certificate, driver license, etc.).

I need to go to Canada for business and then I will drive to USA. Do I have
to have a U.S. passport if I am flying to Canada from Europe?

Thanks,

I don't know if Canada allows a US citizen to enter without a passport
when you're coming from the Europe, the same way that they do when
you come from the US.

The airline will probably give you a hassle, and they could potentially
deny you boarding.

PLUS, you are required to enter the US with your US passport,
when you are returning from a trip outside the western hemisphere,
even if it is via Canada. Because you're coming from Europe,
you are required to enter the US with a passport, not just
proof of citizenship, and it doesn't matter that you're coming via
Canada.

P.S. Who's going to be the first to ask, "But how will they know
that you're coming from Europe?"

Last I looked, Western Europe was considered "Western Hemisphere" and
not just contiguous N. America.

Looking at CIC's web site, it's not even clear that American's don't
need passports ... wonder who designed that!

And as for "driving to the US", note that as an American resident you
cannot drive a Canadian registered car into and in the US.

You will be denied boarding. Go to the nearest US Embassy and apply
for a new passport. Your story does not hold water. It appears you are
trying to return to US and slip thru the border undetected.

Make life simple. Just get a US passport if
you are truly a US citizen. With all that
is happening now-a-days, it's best to travel
with a US passport if you have to come back
into the USA. SO, my advice to you is to go
to the US embassy in the country you are in
and get a US passport. That way, you'd have
no problems coming back.
Good luck.

How did they let you into whichever country you are in now without a
passport ?
