Do I need fingerprints???

So here's the deal, I'm trying to get a police certificate from Australia
(my birth country) and on the application form it says "Fingerprints, if
required". I've called the Australian Consulate in Ottawa, Canadian
Immigration and my dad in Australia has called the Australian Police, they
all tell me to ask someone else and I'd just like a straight answer. So my
question is this:
I'm applying for permanent residency via spousal sponsorship from my wife.
I've never been arrested or convicted of any crimes. Do I require
fingerprints for the appropriate police certificate from Australia? I have
two options:
(i) Police Certificate based on a national search of name only at a fee of
$37.20; and
(ii) Police Certificate based on a national search of name and fingerprints,
at a fee of $131.80.
Which one to I need? Because if the fingerprint search isn't a necessity,
than I'll save the 95 odd dollars.
Please don't tell me to call somewhere again, I just want a straight answer!

In my case - applying from Australia - I did have to get fingerprints.
I forget how much they cost, but I did them through the QLD Police HQ. I
lived in Brisbane at the time, so don't recall if that was because it was
the best place to go, or if I would have had to have done that anyway.
You will not get a straight answer from this newsgroup, since it has no
legal authority. I am presuming you are in Canada. Therefore, you should
contact CIC again and tell them quite frankly that you need to know ASAP.
Ask them where/how you can get WRITTEN confirmation. If you're not in
Canada, contact the nearest diplomatic outpost.

This is great...but what if there's a Will Ryan who was a real yob? I
know from experience...it happens. :-)
Good luck.
