Default Do babies need a SIN card?

Hello,

I'm a citizen waiting patiently for PP request to sponsor my other half from the UK. I just recently obtained a SIN for myself from abroad but am now wondering if I should have asked for one for our UK born canadian citizen child? -Does a baby need a SIN or is it only required when you enter the workplace as an adult?

Thanks in anticipation,

Biiiiink

We got a SIN for our kid but only because it is required to open a tax sheltered RESP education savings plan for her. There is no other requirement to do it that I'm aware of.
