Default Disheartened after Eligibility checker 😥

Hey 👋

I have recently become a little obsessed with the idea of moving to South Alberta, I’ve been watching YouTube videos of others who have made the move, I have joined Calgary based FB groups, researched areas to live, getting my 3 dogs over there etc

I thought the application would be a breeze until I did the Eligibility calculator on the cig.gc.ca website and it said we wouldn’t be eligible for express entry. 😫

My partner is 41, he is a ‘Gas Safe’ registered domestic Gas Engineer and has owned his own successful company for 10+ years. I thought this would allow us easy access to become permanent residents and then, later, citizens. I have done admin/ buying work in the construction industry for the last 10 years (I’m 31) until I lost my job last year to Covid. I am now self employed doing mobile hair services.

My partner is happy to work for a company (for the first time ever) but would ideally set up on his own either doing plumbing/ gas or hot tub hire (his other venture).

When we sell our property here we will have £1m+ to bring to Canada to start our
lives.

Is there any chance I did something wrong on the calculator? We have no children but also no degrees only our professional certifications which allow us to be insured to work here. We are not married but have lived together for 7 years.

Any advise would be appreciated

Thank you 🇬🇧🇨🇦

Hello and welcome to BE!

I suggest following Christmasoompa's very useful guide to filling in the 'come to Canada wizard' and then post back with your results. Sometimes you can be told 'computer says no' for as simple a reason as not putting down the right answer to 1 question.
https://britishexpats.com/wiki/Quick..._by_step_guide

For the sake of the wizard put down that you have taken your IELTS and got top marks, that you have the required funds and that you have had your education (ECE) assessed // and / or that your partner has a 'certificate of qualification' (which he will need to work in plumbing / gas fitting etc.,)

Your professional certifications may not count in Canada - your partner would need to get his certifications recognised in the Province you are hoping to move to. As a plumber/Gas fitter, he could apply under Federal Skilled Worker (Trades) when he has converted his certifications (to Certificate of Qualiifications) or got a valid job offer. https://tradesecrets.alberta.ca/expe...ience-program/

As a hair stylist you will also need Provincial certification: https://alis.alberta.ca/occinfo/cert...d-hairstylist/

Other options would be applying under one of the Provincial programs or under the 'Start up' program if he wants to remain as self employed. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration...tart-visa.html

There are other Provinces that have routes you may qualify for, if you aren't totally set on Alberta.

Thank you ever so much for the detailed response! I feel my next step should be to contact Albertas Apprenticeship & Industry Association centre to find out about having his certification compared to what’s required there and how we go about converting it. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like they have an email address? Or is there a process we need to start and this will be sorted out as part of it? Perhaps I should consult an immigration specialist to make this process easier for us as this is completely new to us.

He would prefer to carry on as self employed and we would have the funds to cover ourselves until his work picks up but not sure if we would be less likely to achieve the requirements for this at all?

No need to consult an immigration consultant unless you have complex backrounds (multiple marriages/criminal past/health issues etc.,) - you will have to provide all the information to immigrate, get your police certificates, get proof of work experience, references, take IELTS, get your education assessed and have medicals done.. the process isn't difficult - you can do it online - and we have lots of members who can offer help if you are unsure about anything.

The first step is to retake the wizard and ascertain if you will need a job offer to immigrate or whether you will have enough points not to need one.. or if you can't qualify for Express Entry and need to consider an alternative such as to apply under the 'Start Up' I linked to (which is basically getting an investor in Canada to approve your business plan to start a new business in Canada).

An Immigration consultant can't help you with the certification. For the certification, follow the step by step guide on the page I linked to under "Step 1: Apply Online for the Trades Qualifier – Work Experience program" he will need it for both Gas Fitter and Plumber... it will be based on the provable work experience he has - he will need around 9,000 hours - which can be self employed experience.

To immigrate under Federal Skilled Worker (Trades) he will need to have either a certificate of qualification or a valid job offer. The advantage to coming in under that stream is for Express Entry the points required are much lower.
