Considering employment in Canada (a few questions)
Hello,
I've learned of a job in Canada that I've already started to apply for. I'm a native of the USA and intend to stay a USA citizen. I've not dealt with these issues before and could use lots of information to help sort out what I need to do and whether or not it is a good idea for me personally. The basic reason for considering the position is that it would be near a family that I met in Florida a few years ago while working with them. He was here on a one or two year visa from Canada. He moved back to Canada with his wife from the USA. While this relationship was the source of hearing about the position, it is also part of the career path that I am interested in. The company also has its main office in the USA, so they will be familiar with what I need to do. At the moment I'm still hoping to get another interview. I know that I should start the process for getting a passport visa. I travel to Canada, and Mexico often and the birth certificate plus driver's license routine is getting old. The position is a combination of management and software engineering. I presume that under NAFTA there isn't much of a problem with that. I've started to look for information on taxes that both countries will want. I will want to get reasonable health insurance and so far have very little information on how to obtain such protection in Canada and what support may be offered by the company. I will also need to gauge expenses and see if it is reasonable for me to make such a move. I have friends and family in the USA so I plan on visiting the USA often. How will this affect my employment and border crossings (air)? I understand from working with others working here that I may need to periodically return to the USA for an extended period to maintain citizenship. As I work my way through the usa.gov and other sites what else should I be looking for? I'm trying to be prepared to ask the relevant questions as the process unfolds. Thank you for your help, David |
