An applicant for citizenship must maintain his permanent resident status until he has
received his Canadian citizenship. Leaving Canada for an extended period, or taking
up residence in another country, after applying for citizenship but before
citizenship is received could result in permanent residency being lost. Losing
permanent residency before citizenship is received would make a person ineligible for
citizenship.
