Hello All
I am a canadian citizen and my wife is a U.S. Citizen. We have been living together in Canada for almost 3 years. So the citizenship application time is approaching.
a. We applied for her Permanent residency in July 2004
b. She became Permanent resident in December 2004
Being a U.S. Citizen she did not need a Visa to travel to Canada, both before we applied for her Permanent Residency and after we had applied.
So the question is, for the purpose of calculating residency requirement for Canadian citizenship:
1. Do we count the time she physically spent in Canada BEFORE we applied for her Permanent residency?
2. Do we count the time she physically spent in Canada AFTER we applied for her Permanent residency, but BEFORE she became a Permanent Resident?
I will appreciate any pointers/guidance in this matter.
Regards

Hi
You go back 4 years from the date of application. So if you applied at the end of the month, Jan/08, you go to Jan/04. In that period she must have 1095 days of physical residence.
If she became a PR in Dec/04 and had not left Canada from that date to now, she would have 1095+ days of physical residence. If she had left Canada during that time, she could count 1/2 the time she was in Canada as a visitor between Jan/04 to Dec/04 to come to the required days.

Thanks for your reply.
So you are suggesting that even the days she was a "visitor" can be counted towards the days for calculation of citizenship.

Each day in the four year prior to citizen application can be used but each day is counted as half a day if on visitor/working visa and full day if a PR.
As soon as you reach 1095 days within the past four years you can apply. If you've been PR for two years you'd have to be physically present for 2 years as visitor.
Key word is physically present. Go south of the boarder for an overnight stay and those days are deducted.
feb 29, leapyear, can not be counted.
