Post Canada PR: Which path?

Hello,

I've spent a few months doing some research into Canada and looking at pathways to obtaining a Permanent Residency, but I've become very unsure about what exactly is the best/right pathway for me. I'd really like to progress with this so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

A bit about me
  • 29 years old (turned 29 very recently).
  • British Citizen (I currently live in a Nordic country, however).
  • I completed 2 years of University for a Computer Science degree, however, my 3rd year was a work placement abroad, and I never returned to take my final year, therefore I have no degree.
  • I work as a Software Developer and have 6 years of full-time experience in that field (NOC 2173)
Concerns/thoughts
  • Whilst I might qualify for Express Entry, I believe this won't prove helpful, as without a degree I will get nowhere near enough points, I have of course completed A-Levels but as I understand, these are considered as part of Secondary school (as opposed to post-secondary). Therefore I count this pathway as "out".
  • I qualify for IEC
  • I have the option to take study in Canada (or anywhere else) to complete my final year (as long as direct entry into the 3rd year is possible)
  • I can search for a job and I believe I could find an employer, but I'm not sure an employer would be willing to wait for a visa by going through a PNP program
Concrete questions
  1. Which pathway would be the best in my particular situation?
    1. I study and then go through IEC, but that is really cutting things fine
    2. I could go straight into IEC but I worry that this isn't good enough for an employer, knowing that I only have 24 months of a valid visa
    3. I could go into IEC first and then study afterward (providing point 1.2 isn't an issue)
    4. I can apply for jobs and keep my fingers crossed that an employer is willing to wait for me to join them

I'm really quite stuck in figuring out exactly what is the best pathway and which is most likely to give me the result that I want. I have looked into many different provinces in Canada and whilst I am most interested in British Columbia, I know that it might not be realistic to set sights on any particular area. I would really appreciate it if anyone has any insights/advice in my particular situation, or perhaps knows about something that I haven't thought about.

Cheers,

Hi, welcome to BE.

Don't forget that once you have an IEC you have a year to enter Canada and activate it, so that's still an option even with finishing your last year of uni. Personally, as you are so close to a degree I'd recommend you do get it, as employers seem to want a degree for every job in Canada (admin assistant jobs have degrees as mandatory requirements!). It would save you being automatically rejected from a lot of jobs and just give you more of a chance.

I'd forget option 4, realistically without specialist experience no employer is going to wait months and pay lots for you when they could hire a Canadian more cheaply and easily.

If you have the funds to study in Canada then that would be a really good route, as it would mean you'd end up with a Canadian degree that will be more recognisable to Canadian employers, and get you over there sooner. But that wouldn't be a cheap option so it depends on your savings really.

If not, then I'd go for finishing your degree in the UK but get an IEC 'in hand' whilst you do so, and then head out to Canada after that.

Best of luck.
