Default Can a Canadian citizen live in the US?

Someone told me that it is possible to live/work in the US if you have a Canadian
passport. Is that true?

Thanks Nishant

"Snow birds" usually move to Florida for the winter only and live there for less than
6 months in any given year, so they have no problems.

Thanks for all your replies. Does this mean that it is possible for a person to visit
the US and live there for a little under 6 months twice every year (make two trips to
Canada before expiry of the 6 month visitor visa)?

Not if you are "caught" it isn't. In this situation, it is clear that your intent is
not "seasonal vacation", but rather disguised residence.

You may get away with it, but if you're caught, the penalties could be significant.

Yes that's true, a Canadian citizen can work in U.S.A. in TN (non-immigrant)visa.

It is by no means a "blanket true". There are some rules to it: I think that as a
*visitor* to the US, you cannot stay more than 6 months per year in the US. As for
work in the US, there are 2 ways to do it:
1) Under the NAFTA agreement, you are allowed to work in the US on a year by year
basis. All you need is a job-offer from a US employer, and the immigration officer
would issue your work-permit at your port of entry. You have to renew the permit
every year. But note that the immigration officer has the full right to NOT give
you a permit. It's not that if you have a job offer, you're all set. I don't know
the details of it, but my understanding is that there are some things that the
immigration officer should be convinced of (other than having a job offer).
2) Just like any other foreigner, you can of course work in the US through the well
known H1 visa.

It is also my understanding that working in the US under NAFTA a lot easier than the
H1 process.

Hope that helps.

Hani.

Only if he qualifies ... and that means one of a group of professional category jobs
that mostly require Bachelors degrees. It's not a carte blanche "any Canadian can
work in the USA" ... it's just a little less rigid than the h1b program.
